About Lorne Wall

Lorne Wall is a self-taught bronze artist, born in the Highlands of Cape Breton Island and raised in the small community of West Mount.  Lorne grew up with a sincere admiration for the artistic talents of his grandfather, Dan O’Callaghan, who Lorne wall scultormanaged to support a family of 16 with the proceeds of his paintings.  Adventurous and inspired, Lorne moved to California where he made his living creating cartoons and illustrations for major studios as well as selling his work as a freelance artist.

After moving to Calgary, Alberta in 1987, Lorne became intrigued with the idea of creating bronze sculptures and began researching the various techniques and processes involved. Although friends were skeptical when Lorne invested in the casting mold for his first project, the quality of craftsmanship and the attention to detail evident in his first bronze sculpture entitled “Bull Elk” clearly indicated that Lorne had found his niche. As he began to show his bronze work, a restaurant owner originally from Athens told Lorne about some of the ancient and traditional bronze colouring methods used by the Greeks.  Lorne’s interest was piqued and the experimental process of applying what he learned in his research took his bronze work in a new direction.

Lorne Wall entered his sculpture “Bull Elk” in the Western Art Show, a two-week juried art competition held each year at the Calgary Stampede. The high quality of his work quickly launched a favorable reputation among bronze art collectors from aall over the world. Over a period of 21 years, Lorne continued to show his work at the Calgary Stampede, and has often been a featured artist. Lorne’s bronze sculpture, “Legend and Reality” won “Best of Show” and “Collector’s Choice” awards in 1996 and 1997. Lorne also won the “Collector’s Choice” award for “Buffalo Hunter” at the Calgary Stampede’s Western Art Show.

Since completing his first bronze, Lorne has completed 108 limited edition bronzes (of 18). In 2000 he was chosen to design the annual Art Collectors Pin “Boots n’ Brushes”. His bronze sculpture “Along the Fence Line” was chosen “Best of Show” in 2002. Lorne completed his first life size sculpture in 2001, titled “The Constructor” which stands outside of the Calgary Construction Association.
Most recently, Lorne’s design of a life-sized miner was chosen by the residents of Canmore, Alberta to be a celebrated town monument.  By interviewing local residents pictured in the town’s museum exhibits, Lorne’s integrity as an artist is seen in every detail, authentically and vividly bringing the town’s history to life.

To our delight Lorne plans to continue sculpting and spending time on oil painting in his new home in the Comox Valley, on Vancouver Island, BC.
